Red Silhouette

This silhouette, which I cut with a knife and not from life, was part of a sequence for a book illustration for a modern retelling of a fairy story. This picture represented one of the three murdered wives of the main character in the story. The silhouette neatly reflects the solidity of the once-living person alongside her shade – the essence of her soul. The blood red colour suggests her gory ending!

Stretch

We always think of silhouettes as being made up of solid colours. Stretch was one of a series of three images that were inspired by the movements of dancers. Each is cut from pages of Gray’s Anatomy as I wanted the text and drawings of leg and arm muscles and bones to fill the silhouettes of the dancers.
